Some movie critics consider 1939 the best year of Hollywood. Famous movies from that year included Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Ten films were nominated for Best Picture in 1939. Nine films were nominated for Best Picture in 2013.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a classic movie that popularized the filibuster. Today Senator Rand Paul is filibustering because President Obama has refused to provide a public policy for how the federal government will use drones in the United States.
Years ago I rented this movie on videotape and watched it with my parents. James Stewart, the main actor, is one of the most likable actors I have ever seen.
The movie's famous filibuster scene can be watched here.
Today I watched Rand Paul filibuster and his words are inspiring:
"I will speak until I can no longer speak, I will speak as long as it takes, until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our constitution is important, that your right to trial by jury is precious, that no American should be killed on American soil without first being charged with a crime, without first being found to be guilty by a court."
