Protect Your Religious Freedom

text size A A A

The month of May shed light on multiple serious cases that target religious freedom. For example, the government has used intimidation tactics to unjustly target Christian and conservative groups because they represent beliefs contrary to the Obama administration. James Dobson, Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, and various other Christian leaders have been heavily targeted by the IRS. Many join Congressman Kevin Brady (R) in asking, "Is this still America?"

But that's not all... Religious freedom for Judeo-Christian members of the military is being threatened, too. The Pentagon released a statement confirming that soldiers could be prosecuted for promoting their faith: "Religious proselytization is not permitted within the Department of Defense...Court martials and non-judicial punishments are decided on a case-by-case basis...". Yes, you read that correctly: The Pentagon is considering prosecuting servicemen and women for sharing their Christian faith. That's stripping away freedom from the very heroes who are fighting to keep and protect it! Read more about it here. Take action now and sign this petition called "Protect religious freedom for our troops - not attack it."

As Lt. Gen. William Boykin has said, "If chaplains and other personnel are censored from offering the full solace of the Gospel, there is no religious freedom in the military." We had the honor of meeting Lt. Gen. Boykin and we agree with his stand for freedom.

The Pentagon has confirmed that soldiers could be prosecuted for sharing their Christian faith. Consider the astute response from Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council: "Why would military leadership be meeting with one of the most rabid atheists in America to discuss religious freedom in the military? That's like consulting with China on how to improve human rights."

Another vocal beacon, Dr. Ben Carson, spoke truth which applies to our country's politically correct yet anti-Christian freedom situation: "The PC (politically correct) police are out in force at all times. We've reached a point where people are afraid to actually talk about what they want to say, because somebody might be offended. We've got to get over this sensitivity; it keeps people from saying what they really believe. It muffles people, it puts a muzzle on them; and, at the same time, keeps people from discussing important issues while the fabric of their society is being changed."

To further this point, let's ask a different question: What if an NBA star, instead of "coming out", suddenly announced that he was a devout Christian? The secular media would likely turn so silent that the crickets could be heard. Then there would come the vile jokes, snide headlines, etc. Indeed, there exists a strange bias...

How do we cope and hope in the face of this concerted secular media and governmental attack on our basic religious freedoms? Well, this edition of Unite the USA features an article by Gary Bauer that addresses unjust treatment by towards conservative and Christian groups. It also includes action tips to protect your own religious freedom and other great resources. (View this edition here: http://www.unitetheusa.org/id97.html.) Remember, no person is liked by everyone. So why live like it's possible to be liked by all? Why be politically correct yet eternally incorrect? What's important is to do what God wants us to do...even if people dislike us in the process.

America needs God. "Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety" (Proverbs 29:25). Let's share the love and truth of the Lord! In the end, it will be more than worth it! Oh, to hear Him say, "Well done!" Let's live out I Corinthians 13.
