Episcopal priest Phillips Brooks authored the poem "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and his church organist Lewis Redner composed the music. The song became very popular after Brooks' death in 1893. Yahoo reports that Brooks and Redner were both bachelors in an article about the history of this Christmas carol.

Brooks was a such a well known pastor that he was included in the 1911 edition of Encyclopædia Britannica but it didn't mention this song.

Church choirs often perform this tune and famous singers Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and Mariah Carey recorded it.
