The documentary Divorce Corp. describes how this system has been corrupted and offers solutions to reduce the costs of filing for divorce. Divorce Corp. reports that divorce is "$50 billion a year U.S. family law industry."
Attorneys that charge a flat fee for service can save divorcees a lot of money. However, few divorce attorneys are payed with this arrangement. Instead most are paid by the hour.
Attorney Doug Kepanis says, "If a judge is late and you're sitting there for three hours, that client is getting billed for those three hours."
