Earlier this year debt on student loans in America exceeded $1 trillion. The average college student now owes more than $20,000 when he or she graduates.

Financial commentator Peter Schiff has recommended slashing government spending on higher education. He is not alone in saying that there is too much money being spent on higher education in America.

Billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel has challenged college students to drop out of school and start a business instead.
