One Factor That Predicts Success: Do You Have It?

Psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth is fascinated by why some people are more successful than others. As a 7th grade teacher she noticed that the smartest students weren't always the most successful.

Her TED Talk reminded me of a Bible verse. Ecclesiastes 9:11 says, "I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all."

Duckworth's research shows that grit, not intelligence or talent, is the key indicator of success. Duckworth defines grit as "passion and perseverence for very long-term goals." She says, "Grit is living life like its a marathon, not a sprint." Do you have grit?

Postscript: The word "success" only appears once in the King James Version of the Bible and 11 times in the English Standard Translation.
