Unintended Consequences: Good Government Intentions Cause Harm (VIDEO)

Professor Don Boudreaux says, "Intentions are not results." As an example he cites the Endangered Species Act which sometimes results in declines in an animal population. When a landowner finds an endangered species on his property, he may kill the animal and bury it. This is called "shoot, shovel and shut up."

This problem of unintended consequences is found throughout economics and politics. People with good intentions can cause much harm.

Forgiving a Serial Killer

Gary Ridgway

In this video, Robert Rule, the father of Linda Rule, forgives serial killer Gary Ridgway. Linda was 16 years old when she was murdered.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported on Robert Rule's act of forgiveness in this 2003 article:

"Mr. Ridgway, there people here who hate you, I'm not one of them. I forgive you for what you have done. You've made it difficult to live up to what I believe, and what God says to do, and that is to forgive. And he doesn't say to forgive certain people, he says to forgive all. So you are forgiven, sir."

What Part of the Gospel Is Optional? (VIDEO)

In this video pastor and author David Platt compares the American dream to the Gospel:

"The mantra of the American dream is to advance yourself. With hard work, ingenuity and innovation you can have it all. The frightening reality of the Gospel, Jesus does call us to give up everything we have."

This video promotes Platt's book Radical which is a challenge to Christians to leave our comfort zone and sacrificially follow Christ.

Platt concludes with these words, "Church, we are Plan A and there is no Plan B."

The Gospel is not optional if we want to love and serve God.
