Dr. Ben Carson

Phil Robertson was removed from the TV show Duck Dynasty for saying that homosexuality is a sin and other comments that could be described as politically incorrect.

On February 7, 2013, Dr. Ben Carson spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast. Carson spoke about the dangers of political correctness. He said that "we've reached the point where people are afraid to actually talk about what they want to say because somebody might be offended."

Carson also offered a solution to the PC problem: "What we need to do in this PC world is forget about unanimity of speech and unanimity of thought and we need to concentrate on being respectful of those people with whom we disagree."

In 1941 music teacher Katherine Davis turned a Czech Christmas carol into one of the most famous songs in the English language by translating the lyrics for "Carol of the Drum." Harry Simeone recorded the song and changed its title to "The Little Drummer Boy" in 1958. According to Songfacts, this song "was released around Christmas every year from 1958-1962. It made the US Top-40 all 5 years and became a holiday classic." Wikipedia reports that there are more than 220 versions of "The Little Drummer Boy."

This famous carol has been recorded by gospel, country, pop, and punk musicians.

Methodist preacher Charles Wesley was a prolific poet and wrote more than 6,000 hymns including the famous Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."

The BBC reported, "Charles' hymns have been featured on television shows such as South Park and The Simpsons, and recorded by artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Mariah Carey. To this day people training as Methodist local preachers have to study John's sermons and be knowledgeable about Charles' hymns."

According to SongFacts, the words to this Christmas song were revised by evangelist George Whitefield who was famous for his involvement in the Great Awakening. Composer Felix Mendelssohn wrote the music for the best known version of this hymn. These lyrics and music weren't combined until after all three of these men had died.

In 1855 William Cummings created the popular arrangement of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."

In this video actress Julie Andrews sing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" during a Christmas TV special broadcast in 1973.

Francis Chan: What Does the Bible Say About Church?

Photo: Flickr/aussiegall - Creative Commons
Church building in Australia made of corrugated iron.

According to his website, pastor and author Francis Chan "is working to start a church planting movement in the inner city of San Francisco and also working to launch a countrywide discipleship movement."

This emphasis on church planting produces some interesting questions. In the following video Chan asks what would you say if you had to describe church with just the Bible.

The Greek word for church is ekklesia. The KJV New Testament Greek Lexicon defines this word as:

  1. an assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious meeting
  2. a company of Christian, or of those who, hoping for eternal salvation through Jesus Christ, observe their own religious rites, hold their own religious meetings, and manage their own affairs, according to regulations prescribed for the body for order's sake
  3. those who anywhere, in a city, village, constitute such a company and are united into one body
  4. the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth
  5. the assembly of faithful Christians already dead and received into heaven

Chan identifies four characteristics of the church from the Bible. Make your own list and then compare to what he says in this video. FULL POST

How Governments and Big Business Corrupt Capitalism

Video blogger Amanda Billyrock has created a series of videos to explain in simple terms the concepts of economics.

This video explains how governments and corporations work together and distort capitalism. Lobbyists influence politicians to write laws benefitting various industries. This practice is sometimes called corporatism or crony capitalism and it robs consumers.

Investopedia defines crony capitalism as:

A description of capitalist society as being based on the close relationships between businessmen and the state. Instead of success being determined by a free market and the rule of law, the success of a business is dependent on the favoritism that is shown to it by the ruling government in the form of tax breaks, government grants and other incentives.

Economics in One Lesson - Parity Prices

Billyrock says, "Broken window fallacy won't go away." Do you know what that means? If not, check out this video.

Video: Leopard Shows Motherly Instinct for Baby Baboon

Photo: YouTube screencapture
Leopard with baby baboon.

Discovery Channel poses this question that is a mystery for evolutionary biologists:

"Why do we, and many animals, do good things for others when the results seem to offer no direct benefit to us?" According to research, altruism is instinctive behavior that forms without cultural training in babies [source: CBC].

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy reports that the famous scientist Charles Darwin thought about this issue:

"From a Darwinian viewpoint, the existence of altruism in nature is at first sight puzzling, as Darwin himself realized. Natural selection leads us to expect animals to behave in ways that increase their own chances of survival and reproduction, not those of others."

A famous proverb says, "I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." - Psalm 139:14 ESV FULL POST

Thanksgiving Proclamations: Obama and Reagan Recognize God

In the following video and published statement we see that President Ronald Reagan's 1985 Thanksgiving address and President Barack Obama's 2013 Thanksgiving Proclamation both recognize God.

President Ronald Reagan's Thanksgiving Address

Presidential Proclamation -- Thanksgiving Day, 2013

- - - - - - -

Thanksgiving offers each of us the chance to count our many blessings -- the freedoms we enjoy, the time we spend with loved ones, the brave men and women who defend our Nation at home and abroad. This tradition reminds us that no matter what our background or beliefs, no matter who we are or who we love, at our core we are first and foremost Americans.

Our annual celebration has roots in centuries-old colonial customs. When we gather around the table, we follow the example of the Pilgrims and Wampanoags, who shared the fruits of a successful harvest nearly 400 years ago. When we offer our thanks, we mirror those who set aside a day of prayer. And when we join with friends and neighbors to alleviate suffering and make our communities whole, we honor the spirit of President Abraham Lincoln, who called on his fellow citizens to "fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union."

Our country has always been home to Americans who recognize the importance of giving back. Today, we honor all those serving our Nation far from home. We also thank the first responders and medical professionals who work through the holiday to keep us safe, and we acknowledge the volunteers who dedicate this day to those less fortunate.

This Thanksgiving Day, let us forge deeper connections with our loved ones. Let us extend our gratitude and our compassion. And let us lift each other up and recognize, in the oldest spirit of this tradition, that we rise or fall as one Nation, under God.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 28, 2013, as a National Day of Thanksgiving. I encourage the people of the United States to join together -- whether in our homes, places of worship, community centers, or any place of fellowship for friends and neighbors -- and give thanks for all we have received in the past year, express appreciation to those whose lives enrich our own, and share our bounty with others.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-sixth day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

Cookie Monster Displays Fruit of the Spirit: Self-Control

Photo: Michelle O'Connell Photography - Creative Commons

The Apostle Paul listed the "fruit of the Spirit" in one of his letters.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." - Galatians 5:22–23 ESV

The Open Bible has compiled a list of 73 verses on the topic of self-control.

The Bible teaches us to resist temptation even though it isn't always easy. So the next time you are tempted, try to remember 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV which says, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

In this video Cookie Monster sings about self-control. FULL POST

Funny Video: Child Adds Country Song to the Books of the Bible

I wish that I could have seen the looks on the parents' faces of this child that recites the names of the books of the Bible and then starts singing a George Strait country song.

Reciting Bible books and singing

In 2003 this church performed a children's musical with the song Giants in the Promised Land. This song was turned into a humorous music video. The song is based upon a Bible story. God sent spies into Canaan to check out the land He was going to give them.

Is Church Membership Mandatory for Christians?

Some Christians claim there is no biblical requirement for church membership. In this video pastor David Platt says the Bible doesn't command membership but does imply that Christians should be members of a local church. Platt says one of the key roles of the church is accountability.

Platt asks, "Are an accountable member of a local church? ... Who are the leaders that your life is in submission to who are accountable for your spiritual growth? And if you can't answer that question, the reality is you are living contrary to the pattern of the New Testament."

This video clip comes from Secret Church and can be watched here.
