Ronald Reagan's Historic Moment: "Tear Down This Wall!"

Today is the 27th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan's famous speech demanding the Soviet Union tear down the Berlin Wall. In a speech on June 12, 1987, President Reagan stated:

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

Two years later Germans began to chip away at the Berlin Wall and it started coming down. After the 20th anniversary of the wall's demise, Time Magazine reported, "The fall of the Berlin wall caught the world by surprise. For months, East Germany's beleaguered communist rulers had tried in vain to silence a growing opposition movement and stem the tide of people pouring out of the country."

The Bible records another famous wall that came down. Joshua 6 reports how the walls of Jericho collapsed.

"When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city." - Joshua 6:20
